Alejandro Iglesia Photography

We recovered photographer Alejandro Iglesia's website after an attack: malware cleanup, over 11,000 photos rescued and a secure move to a new server.

Case study

Rescue, cleanup and migration of a compromised photography website

The challenge

Alejandro Iglesia is a professional advertising, portrait, lifestyle and beauty photographer. His WordPress website is his portfolio: the place where agencies and brands see his work.

One day the site stopped loading and showed a critical error. When we looked into it we found it had been compromised: it had malicious code that reinstalled itself even when the plugins were deactivated, and administrator accounts that were not his.

The priority was clear: not lose a single photo or page, and get the site back online, clean and protected.

Our solution

First we made a full copy and analysed it without running anything, to find all the malicious code and understand how it worked.

Then we cleaned the database: we removed the intruder accounts, the malware configuration and the spam, and kept all the content intact (pages, portfolio projects, posts and galleries). We checked over 11,000 images one by one to make sure they were real photos and not disguised files.

With clean content we rebuilt the site on a fresh WordPress install, with the theme and plugins downloaded from their official sources and up to date, making sure the design matched the original.

Finally we moved it to a new server with an SSL certificate and security measures: code execution blocked in uploads, file editor disabled and access review.
