piKKi

piKKi — a search engine for films and series on Spanish streaming platforms, with alerts and shared lists

Case study

piKKi — all your platforms, one search engine

The challenge

In Spain a film or series can be on dozens of platforms: subscription services, free ad-supported ones, free channels, and rental and purchase stores. Finding out where a title is, whether it is included in what you already pay for, and when it arrives or leaves means searching platform by platform. The challenge was to build a single search engine that answers «where can I watch it?» with data refreshed every night, adapts to each person's platforms, and lets groups decide together what to watch.

Our solution

We designed and built piKKi, a web app that brings together the catalogue of Spanish streaming platforms in one place. Every title page shows where to watch it and how (included in a subscription, free, rent or buy), with seasons, cast and similar titles. The catalogue can be filtered by platform, type of access, genre, year, runtime and rating. With My platforms, each user ticks the ones they have and the catalogue adapts to them. Besides searching by title, you can search by describing what you remember of the plot, using semantic search that runs on our own server. My list keeps what you want to watch and alerts you when a title arrives on your platforms, leaves, or gets a new season. Shared lists come with an invitation link: whoever receives it sees the list and joins with one button, and each member marks what they have watched and leaves notes. Under the hood, a nightly sync updates availability, seasons and ratings; sign-in is with Google, with secure sessions; and every change goes through continuous integration before deploying itself to the server.

Search by what you remember

Besides searching by title, you can describe the plot in your own words. Semantic search finds the title even if you can't remember its name.

04 / 11

Only what you have

Each user ticks their platforms and the catalogue, title pages and alerts adapt to them.

05 / 11

Where to watch, at a glance

The title page separates free, subscription and store options, and takes you straight to the platform.

Filters built for mobile

Platforms, type of access, genre, year, runtime and rating in a bottom sheet.

07 / 11

My list

What you want to watch, with where each title is and whether it has reached your platforms.

08 / 11

Alerts for what changes

When a title on your list arrives on or leaves your platforms, when a series gets a new season, and who joins your lists.

09 / 11

Shared lists

A list to decide together what to watch: each member marks what they have seen and leaves notes.

10 / 11

Join with a link

Whoever receives the invitation sees the list before joining and joins with a single button, signing in with Google in the same step.

11 / 11

The list owner manages it

They see who joined with the link, can remove anyone, invite their contacts or change the link.
